Less Is Lots More

The kitchen in this beachside condominium on Long Island was too conventional and dated for the homeowners. They enlisted the expertise of designer Bruce Bauerle to turn the space around and make their kitchen as inviting as their short walk to the beach. They also worked with interior designer Joyce Bernstein of Going Spaces who designed spaces and specced aesthetics to complement the condo's open concept.

The owners desired a unique spin on each of the room's focal points. Rather than building a typical rectangular island at center, Bauerle suggested a triangular island with rounded edges for an unusual but smooth shape. All cabinetry was removed from above the sink for a clean look from countertop to ceiling that shows off the glass backsplash. The oven was concealed in the island to keep the cabinetry seamless. This less-is-more approach for the overall design allows special pieces to stand out.

The cherry and cocoa-brown cabinets themselves bring a contemporary warmth and strength that was missing from the original design. At the homeowners' request, Bauerle built bi-fold lift doors that pull upward and fold in half lengthwise to lie flat along the top of the cabinets to reveal the open cabinet beneath. Crystal lighting fixtures and undercabinet lighting with dimmers create a warmly lit retreat for two.
